Mel was genuinely a good guy, and Nick Gianourakos and I both enjoyed knowing him. He absolutely DID have the best oldies record collection in town, bar none. The last time I saw Mel was at the Arlington Diner, where I offered him a seat at my table on a very crowded Sunday AM. It was classic Mel being Mel, as ebullient as ever, attracting attention that my (then) wife did not appreciate. Funny, I just realized I miss Mel more than my ex! Rock softly, Mel...
I knew Mel slightly. I would sometimes run into him on the bus from Arlington to Harvard Square. He was a very nice guy; friendly and soft-spoken. I didn't know of his passing until reading the comments on here. I was very sorry to hear of it.
I too was very surprised to learn of Mel's passing. He and I lived a block apart growing up and saw each other casually when walking Mass Ave for many years after high school. He was a kind guy with a quick rush to a smile and laugh at every encounter. He did LOVE his record collection! Rest in peace, Mel.
